Partners Of Pilots Emergency

Course

COMMON QUESTIONS ASKED BY PARTNER OF PILOTS

  • How would I land the plane if my partner became ill in the air?
  • How do I use the radio to get help?
  • How do I use a GPS to find the nearest airport?
  • How can I get involved and share in my partners fun of flying?

But I don't want a pilot licence.........

The Partners Of Pilots  Emergency course came about after clubhouse discussions with wives or partners of pilots. Many of these ladies wanted to become more comfortable in the cockpit but as we all know, husbands teaching wives how to fly, drive or operate any machinery often leads to problems.

An often stated concern was what they would do and how to land the plane if their partner became ill in the air, and many just wanted to know about radio, charts and other cockpit details, so they could reduce the in-flight workload of their partners and share in some of the fun of flying.

The full POPE course starts in the right hand seat (which is where most partners sit on trips) with a session of familiarisation in the Tecnam Sierra, getting used to the feel of the controls, along with an explanation of what all the dials and buttons do and a demonstration of how stable an aircraft can be. This is an important point to remember, as unlike a car, a aircraft does not need to be flown with hands on the controls constantly if set up correctly. The aircraft is then flown relative to an attitude and setup for a landing in the simplest possible fashion, making an in air incident a more survivable option.

Another option is to simply become more involved in the navigation aspects along with radio and GPS information. These subjects can be conducted in a one on one situation or as you can see from the photos, in a class situation, at your local aero club, or here in Temora.
Both courses cover using the radio to call for help, along with information about using most common GPS units to get to an airport quickly and safely. Once the controls and cockpit instruments are explained many ladies find they are not as intimidated and their fears are reduced considerably. In fact, many go on to become licensed pilots.

POPE course comments:
"Thanks so much for everything. I am very proud of my new found skills and the certificate will take pride of place! My partner now has a more active and interested passenger who can take some of the weight off him when he is flying. The flying was great- gave me much more confidence. The course was run in a very relaxed environment where I could ask questions without feeling self conscious. Explanations were simple and straight forward, and I thought flying was complicated and difficult! Not any more! Thanks, Nicole"
"I did the course to have a better understanding of navigation-to increase my confidence when flying as a passenger. The Gulf trip made me realise how involved the planning of a route is and the variables that need to be taken into consideration. It is good to do a course with other like minded women who are about the same skill level-I found the course very enjoyable. Jill is an excellent teacher and created a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you, Michelle"
"I was one of the 7 co-pilots that Jill helped instruct with information about navigating using WAC, VNC and VTC charts. We had a very enjoyable, brain taxing day and I would urge other female co-pilots to talk to the clubs to do the same navigational courses for co-pilots. Regards Joan."
"I did this course to better understand navigation and help my partner when flying with him. I definitely have a better knowledge and thoroughly enjoyed learning from Jill. The course was run in a language I understood. Thank you, Anne."
